The Career Nobody Talks About
CDCR employs over 4,000 nurses across 35 California institutions. It offers CalPERS pension, PSLF eligibility, job security, and a career ladder from Staff RN to State Chief Nurse Executive — yet most nursing schools never mention it.
This content is written by a senior RN with 23 years of California state institutional nursing experience — covering every role from ICN and TTA RN to SRN II/III and Regional CNC.

These figures reflect base salary ranges only. CDCR nurses covered under SEIU Local 1000 BU17 are also eligible for a seniority pay differential of up to 5% above base salary — effective July 1, 2026 — based on total years of California state service. This differential is PERSable, meaning it counts toward your CalPERS pension calculation. A nurse at 25+ years of state service earns an additional 5% on top of base pay, compounding the pension benefit over time. Source: SEIU Local 1000 BU17 Contract, Section 11.21.17.
Salary ranges reflect 2025–2026 statewide base pay. Geographic differentials apply at select higher cost-of-living institutions. Individual pay depends on classification, step, and years of service. Always verify current ranges at CalHR.ca.gov.
