The Education Breakeven Formula
Before choosing a school or funding path, calculate your breakeven point. This single formula changes how you evaluate every education decision.
The Formula
The result tells you how many years it takes for the higher salary to "pay back" the cost of the more expensive education path.
Scenario A — Private School / Private Job
You owe $150k but make $20k more per year in a private hospital. Your breakeven is 7.5 years — after which the higher salary advantage begins to compound. But you carry debt risk the entire time.
Scenario B — Military HPSP Scholarship
Military pays 100% of tuition plus $2,700/month stipend while you study. You owe $0 and earn a competitive salary from day one. Breakeven is Day 1. The only cost is the service commitment.
Scenario C — Civil Service + PSLF
You may earn $20k less per year than private sector, but after 10 years your loans are 100% forgiven AND you have a pension building. At year 25, the civil servant's total compensation often exceeds the private nurse's by hundreds of thousands.

The Core Strategy
Never Pay Full Price
Before writing a tuition check, exhaust every employer, military, federal, and state program. Most people leave tens of thousands on the table simply because they didn't ask.
Calculate Your Breakeven
Use the formula: Total Debt ÷ Annual Salary Difference. If your breakeven is longer than 5 years, look for a cheaper path or a loan repayment program that eliminates the math entirely.
Stack Programs
Programs can often be combined. Example: Employer tuition reimbursement ($5,250/yr) + PSLF (forgives the rest after 10 years) = near-zero net education cost for civil servants.
